Although Siera Project Co. is clearly geared toward women, we can’t let June pass us by without acknowledging and supporting Men’s Mental Health Month. In fact, one of my best mentors is male; if not for him, I might not have successfully graduated college or ever seen my full potential. Sometimes the conversation about men’s mental health doesn’t seem as important as the discussion centered on women’s mental health, but it is equally important. For the men in our lives, whether they’re family members, friends, partners, or colleagues, showing up and offering support can make a world of difference and positively impact their mental health. And healing conversations can also happen from engaging in this level of support.
Here are 7 simple yet powerful ways to support men during Mental Health Month and beyond:
1. Listen Without Judgment
Sometimes, all it takes is a listening ear. Create a safe space for the men in your life to open up about their feelings and struggles without fear of judgment. Let them know that you’re there to listen, without trying to fix or minimize their experiences.
2. Check in Regularly
Take the initiative to check in on the men in your life regularly. A simple text or phone call can go a long way in showing that you care about their well-being. Ask how they’re doing and let them know that you’re available to talk if they need support.
3. Encourage Self-care
Remind the men in your life to prioritize self-care. Encourage them to engage in activities that bring them joy and relaxation, whether it’s going for a walk, practicing mindfulness, or spending time with loved ones. Self-care is essential for maintaining mental well-being.
4. Normalize Seeking Help
Challenge the stigma surrounding mental health by normalizing seeking help. Let the men in your life know that it’s okay to ask for support and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Offer to help them find resources such as therapy, support groups, or hotlines if needed.
5. Be Patient and Supportive
Supporting someone through mental health challenges can be challenging, but it’s essential to be patient and supportive. Understand that recovery takes time and that setbacks are a natural part of the process. Offer your support and encouragement along the way.
6. Educate Yourself
Take the time to educate yourself about men’s mental health issues and the unique challenges that men may face. By understanding the factors that contribute to men’s mental health struggles, you can better support the men in your life and advocate for change on a larger scale.
7. Lead By Example
Finally, lead by example by prioritizing your mental health and well-being. Show the men in your life that it’s okay to take care of themselves and that seeking support is a normal part of life. By modeling healthy behaviors, you can inspire others to do the same.
This Men’s Mental Health Month, let’s commit to supporting the men in our lives in meaningful and impactful ways. Together, we can break down stigma, foster open conversations, and create a culture of support where everyone feels valued and heard.
